Numbers spreadsheet won't open on my Mac Air

I created a Numbers spreadsheet on my Macbook Pro very recently and mailed it to my friends Macbook Air. She can't open it. Message comes up saying can't open this file. Both computers are less than 4 years old. Only difference in these computers is mine has been upgraded to OS X El Capitan, version 10.11.6. Hers is still running Yosemite, not sure what level.

make sure that the version of Numbers you are using on both computers is the same. You can check the version by launching Numbers and then selecting the menu item "Numbers > About Numbers"
